Do you need a licence to hire a mini digger?
4 min read
One of the most common questions we get is whether the driver needs a licence to hire a mini digger. The answer depends on where the machine is being used, not just the size of the machine.
Private domestic work
There is no legal requirement for a formal licence or ticket to operate a mini digger on private domestic work. The machine is hired on a self-drive basis to a competent operator.
Competent means you understand the controls, the risks, and how to operate safely near boundaries, services and other people. If you are not confident, operated hire is the safer option.
Commercial and CDM sites
On commercial sites, and especially on Construction (Design and Management) regulated projects, the principal contractor will normally require a CPCS or NPORS excavator card.
This is a site-specific rule, not a law that applies to every hire. Ask the site manager or principal contractor before you book.
Insurance and responsibility
You are responsible for the machine while it is on your site. Check that your insurance covers hired-in plant and third-party damage.
If you damage the machine, a boundary wall or an underground service, the costs can quickly exceed the hire cost. Operated hire puts this risk with an experienced operator.
When in doubt, go operated
If nobody on site has recent machine experience, or the dig is close to buildings, services or boundaries, hire an operator with the machine. It is usually cheaper than repairing a mistake.
