Hire Terms & Conditions
Last updated August 2026
These terms apply to all plant and equipment hired from Sterling Plant Group, the trading name of C Boyd Law Ltd, registered office 51 St Georges Works, 51 Colegate, Norwich, NR3 1DD (VAT Reg No. 478 5754 31). By confirming a booking you accept these terms.
1. The hire agreement
A booking is confirmed once we have received your payment and issued a confirmation. The machine remains the property of C Boyd Law Ltd at all times. You hire the right to use it for the agreed period only, and you may not sub-hire, sell, or move it off the agreed site without our written permission.
2. Hire period and rates
- Rates are quoted per day and shown inclusive of VAT at checkout.
- The hire period runs from the delivery date to the collection date shown on your confirmation.
- Sites 40 miles or more from the servicing depot are subject to a minimum two-day hire, because of the transport time involved.
- Keeping the machine beyond the agreed return date is charged at the standard day rate for each extra day. Please call us before the end date if you need longer — availability is not guaranteed.
3. Delivery and collection
- Delivery is charged at £1 per mile, calculated as a round trip from the nearest depot (Norwich or Peterborough).
- You must provide safe, legal access for a transport vehicle and confirm the machine can reach the working area. If we cannot deliver or collect because access is blocked or nobody is on site, a wasted-journey charge equal to the delivery cost may apply.
- You are responsible for identifying underground services, drains and cables before any digging begins.
4. Payment
Full payment is taken up front, either by card at checkout or by bank transfer to C Boyd Law Ltd. Bookings are not held until payment clears. All prices include VAT and a VAT receipt is available on request.
5. Your responsibilities during hire
- Only competent, suitably trained and appropriately aged operators may use the machine.
- Use the machine only for the purpose it is designed for, in line with the manufacturer's instructions.
- Carry out daily checks (fluid levels, tracks, greasing) and report any fault to us immediately.
- Keep the machine secure and immobilised when it is not in use.
- You are responsible for site safety, permits, barriers and the legal disposal of any spoil.
6. Fuel, cleaning and condition
Machines are supplied clean, serviced and fuelled. Please return them clean and refuelled. If the machine comes back excessively dirty or short of fuel, we will charge the reasonable cost of cleaning or refuelling.
7. Damage, loss and liability
From delivery until collection, you are responsible for the machine and any attachments. You are liable for the cost of repairing damage caused by misuse, neglect or an accident, and for the full replacement value if the machine is lost, stolen or written off. Loss of hire income during repair may also be charged.
Fair wear and tear and mechanical breakdown that is not caused by misuse are our responsibility — stop work, call the depot, and we will repair or replace the machine as quickly as we reasonably can.
8. Insurance
Hired-in plant is not automatically insured by us. You must either hold hired-in plant cover (or equivalent insurance for the full replacement value of the machine, including theft and accidental damage) or accept liability for loss and damage as set out in section 7. We may ask to see evidence of cover before delivery.
9. Cancellations and changes
- Cancel more than 48 hours before the delivery date and you receive a full refund.
- Cancel within 48 hours of delivery and we may retain one day's hire to cover the lost slot and transport.
- Cancel after the machine has been delivered and the hire is charged in full for the days already booked.
- Date changes are free of charge subject to availability — call the depot as early as you can.
- If we cannot supply a booked machine, you get a full refund or a replacement machine of similar capability.
10. Operated hire
Where an operator is supplied, the operator remains our employee or contractor, but they work under your site direction and to your programme. You remain responsible for site safety, welfare facilities and access.
11. Limits and governing law
Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or for fraud. Otherwise, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss such as loss of profit or delays to your wider project. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales.
