Plant hire delivery costs explained
3 min read
Transport is where plant hire quotes get murky. Two firms can quote the same day rate and land £120 apart once the lorry is added. Here's how ours works.
The three ways firms charge transport
Zoned pricing: a flat fee per postcode band. Simple, but you overpay if you're just inside a band.
Per-mile pricing: a rate multiplied by the real road distance. Transparent, and what we use.
Bundled 'free delivery': the transport is baked into a higher day rate, so short-distance customers subsidise long-distance ones.
Our pricing
We charge £1 per mile, calculated on the driving distance from whichever depot — Norwich or Peterborough — is closest to your site postcode.
The figure you see in the online booking calculator is the figure you pay. There is no separate collection charge.
Sites 40 miles or more from the nearest depot carry a two-day minimum hire period, because a lorry running two hours each way for a single day's work doesn't stack up.
How to keep transport down
Book from the nearer depot where the machine you want is available at both.
Group jobs: if you have two nearby sites, running consecutive days on one delivery saves a full round trip.
Give an accurate postcode. A postcode one village out can change the quote by £10–£20.
